This video goes over how sidebars can be used and how to manage the modules within the sidebar.
The solution to this is to add "Columns" to your content box, and put one widget in each column (you can make up to 3 columns)
Some small widgets like the polls are smaller then the widget box, so in order to make them fit side-by-side simply shrink the width of the widget box (this will not affect the actual widget) and slide the gray bar all the way over
